Starch bags: clarify ingredients and post-use handling

The name "starch bag" does not indicate the ratio of starch and mixed materials. Before choosing, businesses need to clarify the ingredients, functions and post-use treatment conditions with records of the correct bag model.

Three concepts need to be distinguished

Biological origin refers to raw materials, while biodegradability refers to the ability to be processed under certain conditions. These two properties are different, as European Bioplastics explains; Materials of biological origin do not biodegrade everywhere.

“Compostable” refers to the ability to be processed under appropriate conditions, and does not mean that the bag disappears when left in nature. Need to ask about the scope of certification and the receiving system at the place of use.

Require documents to be attached to the correct bag model

QuestionWhat should you receive?
What materials does the bag include?Component information and material codes
Where does the decomposition statement apply?Conditions, scope and relevant evidence
Are there any labels or certifications? The document is also consistent with the finished product sample
Is it accepted at the place of use?Practical compatibility handling instructions

Documents must match the finished product sample and expected statement. Do not use certificates of other materials to attach symbols. If unsubstantiated, only describe the confirmed ingredient.

Choose specifications according to product and conditions of use

Record item size, weight, sharp edges, wear time and humidity conditions. Test the bottom, mouth and straps with the real thing. The softness or color of the bag does not indicate the load-bearing capacity.

Change the thickness or the ingredient needs to be rechecked. If in direct food contact, the end material must be identified for that purpose; The word “starch” does not demonstrate suitability.

Including storage time

Ask how to preserve and expire the product code. Set appropriate amount for consumption rate, keep batch code for tracking. Newly received samples may be different from samples after storage outside the instructed conditions.

Bags for light orders for quick use at the counter and bags for heavy, long-lasting goods have different requirements. We should not use the same specifications just because we want the same biological materials.

Write clear instructions for use

Post-use instructions should state where disposal has been confirmed. Not recommended for disposal into soil, water or organic waste streams without appropriate local evidence.
