Are paper bags more environmentally friendly than plastic bags?

Clean, folded kraft bags are kept with the paper bags for further use

Paper bags can be a suitable choice for many retail needs, but the material name is not enough to conclude the environmental impact. It is necessary to see how the bag is produced, how many times it is used and how it is disposed of when no longer in use.

According to the life cycle approach United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) Mentioned, replacing a disposable product with another material does not automatically create a better alternative. Reducing unnecessary demand and increasing reusability are points that should be considered with material selection.

There is no one right conclusion for every bag

Environmental assessment can consider many aspects such as greenhouse gas emissions, water use, resources and waste loss. Results depend on bag configuration, energy source, transport and processing conditions.

A large, heavy, disposable paper bag needs to be viewed differently from a medium bag that is kept clean for continued use. Therefore, one should not claim that paper bags are “always better” than plastic bags without appropriate evaluation for the specific product and context.

Kraft color does not indicate recycled paper

Brown colors often evoke natural styles. However, paper color does not accurately indicate the percentage of recycled fibers or the source of raw materials.

If you want to communicate about recycled materials, ask for verifiable information about the paper code being used. “Kraft color”, “with recycled content” and “100% recycled materials” are different descriptions.

See the entire structure of the bag

The paper body is only one part. Straps, adhesives, coatings and lamination films also need to be taken into account. When plastic film or other accessories are included, the entire bag should not be described as “100% paper”.

The ability to collect and recycle depends on the composition of the finished product as well as the local processing unit. Dirty, wet paper or multi-material packaging may require different handling. Businesses should confirm with collection locations instead of giving too general instructions.

Understand FSC labels correctly

Theo FSC label instructions, the labels have different meanings. For materials originating from forests, the 100% FSC label indicates a source from a certified forest. FSC Recycled certifies materials originating from forests as recyclable materials. FSC Mix refers to a mixture of certified source, recycled and/or controlled wood according to the FSC system.

These labels are not a guarantee that every bag will biodegrade or be accepted by every recycling facility. Label use needs to be under the right conditions and confirmed throughout the supply chain. Businesses should not put the FSC symbol on their design just because they have chosen a certified paper.

Designed to be used enough and used again

A bag that fits the product helps limit excess material. Durable enough structure and easy-to-use appearance can help customers keep the bag. If post-use treatment is a priority, plans should be discussed to reduce components that are difficult to separate when actual needs allow.

Stores can also review situations where customers don't need extra bags. Reducing the number of unnecessary bags needs to go hand in hand with the need to protect the product and experience at the point of sale.

Communicate with specific information

Instead of using statements like “non-polluting” or “absolutely good for the environment”, it is better to state confirmed features: paper code, documented recycled content, bag construction or appropriate reuse instructions.

A modest message could be “Keep bag dry and clean for reuse,” if this is appropriate for the product. A clear message will help customers know what to do.

Determine the basis before communicating about the environment

Raw material source, material quantity, usage and post-use treatment need to be viewed together. SquareBag is willing to exchange bag configurations according to needs and material information needs to be confirmed before you communicate about the environment.
