Environmental design, often called ecodesign, considers materials and uses from the start. With paper packaging, it is necessary to maintain the product protection function before deciding to reduce layers, change sizes or change accessories.
List components and tasks
List paper, board, coating, glue, straps, magnets and trays. Record the tasks and amounts of each part when possible. This list helps find parts that are unnecessary or difficult to separate after use.
| Question | Action direction |
|---|---|
| What is the role of details? | Eliminate or simplify unnecessary remainders |
| Is the size too large? | Try on the appropriate size and protection range |
| Is the material easy to separate? | Try the convenient removable structure |
Compare options using the same conditions
Compare two options using the same set of goods and test conditions. Record the amount of material, bale volume, packing work and damage. Reducing paper but increasing broken goods needs to be reevaluated.
Design for real process systems
See where the packaging will be collected and processed. Certification of paper source and proof of recycling are two different things. Each message expected to be announced needs to be based on the correct finished product.
For example, replacing magnets with paper locks can reduce mixed materials. However, the new lock must still hold the lid and open conveniently; Replacing materials has not proven itself to improve the entire life cycle.
Correctly express the measured change
If you say the weight is reduced, clearly state what model it is compared to and how to measure it. Avoid using absolute descriptions like “completely green” without a full assessment.
Which change to start with?
Start with extra sizes or parts with little functionality, then try making larger changes. Determine the reviewer and performance criteria so that each step has clear results.
